Is 25 Too Old to Start Modeling? No. Here's the Truth.
Somewhere around your 23rd birthday, a little voice started saying it. You're too old now. That ship sailed. Models start at 16.
That voice is wrong, and here's the honest truth about why.
Where the age thing comes from
High-fashion runway really does start young. Elite Model Look, one of the world's best-known model searches, takes girls from 14 to 26 who are at least 5'8". That's one corner of the industry, and it's the corner everybody pictures.
Most paid modeling work happens somewhere else.
The work that doesn't care how old you are
- Brand ambassadors: the face of a brand at events, stores and pop-ups. Brands want women their customers relate to, and their customers aren't 16
- Promotional models: trade shows, launches, sampling and sports events
- Commercial and lifestyle: real-looking women for ads, catalogs and social content
- Hosts and on camera: hosts, festival reporters and the JET SETTERS host, a role that is 21 and older only
- Bar and nightlife promotions: 21 and older, so your age is the requirement, not the problem
What you have now that you didn't at 18
- You know your face: your angles, your best side and how you photograph
- You know your style: you stopped dressing for everyone else
- You show up: a booker's favorite girl is the one who's on time, every time
- You can talk to anyone: years of work made you good with people
- You know what you want: and that comes through on camera
Why right now feels like the moment
It isn't just you. Researchers at Wharton studied what they call the fresh start effect: people are far more likely to go after a new goal at a new beginning, like a new year, a new week or a birthday. Google searches for "diet" jump 82% at the start of a year. Your 25th birthday is that kind of moment. So is a Monday. So is today.
Not sure you have the look?
You're not alone. Only 4% of women call themselves beautiful, according to Dove's global research. Take our Screen Test, "Am I pretty enough to be a model?", and find out what kind of Rockstarr girl you are. It takes two minutes.
