There is no Met Gala 2027 theme right now. There was one, for exactly one month.
What was announced. On 31 July 2026, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute announced John Galliano: Horizons as its spring 2027 exhibition, organized by Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute's Curator in Charge. As Vogue reported, it would have been only the third Met monograph on a living designer, after Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons in 2017.
Why it was cancelled. The choice drew immediate criticism because of Galliano's antisemitic, racist and anti-Asian conduct in 2010 and 2011, which the Met itself said the exhibition would address directly. CBS News reported that donors threatened to withdraw gifts, and New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin was among the loudest critics. On 31 August, the Met and Galliano announced the show "will not proceed as planned."
Galliano said: "I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time... I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past." The Met's director, Max Hollein, said: "Following thoughtful discussions with John Galliano, we have together decided not to proceed with the exhibition."
What happens now. The Met's statement ended with one line that matters for everyone waiting on the red carpet: "Information on a new Spring Costume Institute exhibition and the 2027 Met Gala will be announced at a later date." As of 12 October 2026, no replacement theme, dress code or co-chairs have been announced.
When is the Met Gala 2027? The Met says the gala "takes place annually on the first Monday in May," which in 2027 falls on Monday 3 May. That was the date set before the Galliano show was cancelled; the Met has not restated it since, so treat it as expected rather than confirmed.
When the new theme could land. The Met usually announces in two steps. For 2026, the exhibition was announced on 17 November 2025, and the co-chairs and dress code followed on 23 February 2026. For 2025, the co-chairs and dress code were announced on 4 February. If the Met follows its usual rhythm, a new 2027 theme could come any time this autumn, with the dress code and co-chairs early next year.
The bar it has to clear. The 2026 Met Gala, on Monday 4 May 2026, celebrated Costume Art, an exhibition of nearly 400 objects that opened the Met's new Condé M. Nast Galleries. The dress code was "Fashion is Art," and the co-chairs were Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour, with Saint Laurent's Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz leading the host committee. Sabrina Carpenter and Stevie Nicks performed. According to Vogue, the night raised a record $42 million for the Costume Institute, up from $31 million the year before, and the livestream and coverage drew 1.696 billion video views worldwide. Costume Art is on view at The Met Fifth Avenue until 10 January 2027.
How the night works. Between 450 and 600 guests from fashion, film, music, sport and politics attend. Phones and social media are not allowed inside the museum. The gala is the Costume Institute's main source of funding for its exhibitions, publications and acquisitions each year, and Vogue streams the red carpet live on its own platforms, including YouTube and TikTok.
What it means for models. The Met's steps are still the most-watched red carpet in fashion, and the dress code decides what every major house builds for a whole season. Whatever replaces Galliano, the theme will shape what you see in campaigns and on runways next spring. Rockstarr Media will update this page the moment the 2027 theme is announced.
